Title: Original Nancy Hoke painted hope chest entitled “Serenading Thoughts”
A sense of excitement and a feeling of rhythm are experienced when viewing the artwork of Nancy Hoke. There is an underlying complexity in her work, yet a world of joy and silliness is also observed with clear-eyed honesty and imagination.
Nancy was born in Connecticut and spent her earliest years in Panama. Through vivid personal memories, she incorporates the Afro / West Indian culture into many of her illustrations. Even though Nancy’s subject matter has changed over the years, her inimitable style is evident in each of her many designs.
Nancy studied art at the University of Michigan and the University of Maryland. She found her way to Maui in the early 1980's on her way to Fiji, proving that while an extraordinary artist, Nancy has no sense of direction. She now resides in Lahaina, Hawaii.
Candlelighters is grateful to Nancy for her support of our organization and childhood cancer research. In addition to her generosity expressed through the painting of a hope chest for the gala live auction, Nancy has done two additional paintings for Candlelighters which have been printed as note cards and sold on the website store. ‘Naomi’s Hope for a Cure’ is excited that Nancy is joining the list of celebrated artists to raise much needed funds for childhood cancer research.
